Entry to the 2017 Irish Tourism Industry Awards is open to all bona fide tourism businesses, entrepreneurs, visitor attractions, organisations and events, operating during 2015 and/or 2016.

International Initiatives

1. Best International Marketing Initiative

This award is presented to the individual or organisation that has devised and implemented the most outstanding tourism marketing campaign or initiative in an overseas market. Submissions are evaluated on the innovation and creativity of the concept involved, the effectiveness of its execution or implementation and on the results achieved. Applications can include, but are not limited to, new programmes, bundling of experiences, and new ways of communicating – through video, audio, digital media, print or multi-media campaigns – that are directed at increasing the number of international visitors to Ireland.

Judging Criteria:

  • Show the innovation and creativity of your campaign materials and strategy (25%)
  • Explain the engagement/interactivity with the target audience, including use of digital media (25%)
  • Results – show evidence of conversion of awareness/interest to increased visitor numbers (25%)
  • Describe the enhancement of local, provincial and/or Ireland’s national tourism image (25%)

2. Best International Access Initiative

This award is presented to a business or organisation – including air or sea carrier, air or sea port – that has demonstrated a commitment to the development, delivery, promotion and successful sales of a new or existing service or route that has opened up new overseas markets or sectors and increased the number of international visitors to Ireland.

Judging Criteria:

  • Show the incremental traffic growth as a result of your access initiative (50%)
  • Describe the innovativeness and creative presentation of Ireland as a result of your initiative (25%)
  • Explain and demonstrate the opening up of new markets and/or sectors (25%)

Tourism Innovations

3. Best Leisure Tourism Innovation - City & County

This award is presented to the tourism business or organisation that has created the most exceptional tourism product, service or experience for holidaymakers and/or those visiting friends and relatives or taking short breaks, and which are centred on the fundamental principles of hospitality and customer service. You may enter if your business/organisation/product is city-based or county-based and please specify this in your submission.

Judging Criteria:

  • Show how your product / experience demonstrates creativity and innovation (40%)
  • Describe the research and analysis behind your tourism product approach (20%)
  • Show the economic impact of your innovation on the location that it is based (20%)
  • Explain how it promotes incremental tourism activity in the host community (20%)

4. Best Business Tourism Innovation

This award is presented to the operator, service provider or supplier who has developed an innovative meeting, incentive, conference, exhibition or other event program that has demonstrably increased the number of overseas business travellers to Ireland.

Judging Criteria:

  • Show how the bid and/or program content delivered creativity and innovative use of tourism product to win the RFP (Request For Proposal) and where possible, how this enabled Ireland to win the business (40%)
  • Explain the commitment to visitor/participant fulfilment and demonstrate the clients’ satisfaction, i.e. supporting post event feedback, repeat or future business commitment etc. (40%)
  • Describe how this formula enhances Ireland’s reputation as a business tourism destination and what you consider to be the essential elements for delivering success (20%)

5. Best Environmental Tourism Innovation

This award is presented to the business or organisation that has demonstrated a commitment to the development, delivery, promotion and successful sales of a new and innovative tourism product or service that emphasises harmonious integration with the environment and maximises conservation of environmental resources.

Judging Criteria:

  • Explain your innovative use of environmental products or materials (20%)
  • Show how your approach positively impacts on natural habitats and bio-diversity (20%)
  • Describe how your business or organisation maximises efficiency and minimises use of energy (20%)
  • Explain how it preserves and/or enhances the visual environment (20%)
  • Show how it provides social and economic benefits to the local community (20%)

6. Best Local Authority Tourism Innovation

This award is presented to the local authority that demonstrates excellence in tourism planning and execution, the provision of tourism facilities and services, marketing, event development and management including cross county border initiatives, and the overall contribution made to the local tourism industry.

Judging Criteria:

  • Explain the tourism innovation and execution behind your local authority initiative (40%)
  • Show the provision of tourism facilities to the domestic market and international tourist (20%)
  • Describe how you market and promote your local authority innovation as a sustainable initiative (20%)
  • Show the overall economic contribution and legacy benefits (20%)

7. Best Innovative Place to Stay

This award is presented to a business or organisation that has successfully developed and promoted an innovative, creative and exciting innovation within overnight accommodation. This innovation must be new and give the consumer a unique experience. Applicants are encouraged from all strands of Fáilte Ireland registered or approved accommodation, including hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, caravan and camping, holiday apartments or cottages, individual self-catering apartments or cottages and Welcome Standard.

Judging Criteria:

  • Creation of something new and innovative within the overnight accommodation sector (60%)
  • Attraction of new visitors as a result of the initiative (20%)
  • Commitment of growth and sustainability of the product/experience (20%)

Tourism Experiences

8. Best Festival / Event Experience - Large & Small

This award is presented to the festival or event that exemplifies industry best practices in all aspects of its operations and which increases the number of international visitors to Ireland. It may be, but is not limited to being, of the following type: cultural, historical, musical, arts, sporting, culinary, literary, humorous, or of general interest. You may enter if your festival or event is large (over 50,000 people in attendance) or small (under 50,000) and please specify this in your submission.

Judging Criteria:

  • Define the commitment to visitor/participant/spectator satisfaction (20%)
  • Demonstrate innovation in areas such as digital capability, animation/branding of the local area or the provision of a timely programme of activities. Also the commitment to growth, innovation, brand extension and product development (20%)
  • Show how it stimulates economic activity during the festival/event (20%)
  • Explain how it promotes tourism and develops economic activity year-round in the host community and/or region (20%)
  • Describe the social/cultural impact on Ireland and/or the host community and/or region (20%)

9. Best Adventure Experience

This award is presented to the business or organisation that has demonstrated a commitment to the development, delivery, promotion and successful sales of a creative, exciting outdoor tourism experience that is designed for activity enthusiasts, and which showcases and promotes Ireland’s spectacular scenery and the possibilities that it offers the overseas visitor.

Judging Criteria:

  • Explain the alignment with the needs and interests of great escapers and/or social energisers (40%)
  • Describe how your adventure experience demonstrates excitement and creativity (20%)
  • Show how your adventure experience attracts new visitors to your region (20%)
  • Define the commitment to growth and sustainability of the product/experience (20%)

10. Best Food & Beverage Experience

This award is presented to the individual, company or organisation that has successfully developed and promoted an authentic, innovative and enriched tourism-related food or beverage offering for leisure and/or business visitors – including, but not limited to, carriers, dining venues, tourism attractions, and festivals/events – and which showcases and enhances Ireland’s Food & Beverage Story that sets Ireland’s experiences apart from other destinations and places us on the international food and drink stage.

Judging Criteria:

  • Describe the creation of an innovative food and/or beverage offering over the past three years by an existing or new operator, community group or destination (40%)
  • Show the attraction of new visitors as a result of the initiative (20%)
  • Explain how it provides value for money and improves margins, in accordance with Fáilte Ireland’s Food/Beverage Experience Delivery model (20%)
  • Define the commitment to growth and environmental sustainability of your product/experience (20%)

11. Best Cultural Experience - Large & Small

This award is presented to an individual or organisation that has successfully developed and promoted an authentic, innovative and enriched cultural tourism experience – including, but not limited to, heritage, music, living history and genealogy – or to an organisation that has demonstrated a commitment to culture as a key aspect of encouraging and promoting tourism growth to Ireland and their region. You may enter if your cultural experience is large (over 100,000 people per annum) or smaller (under 100,000) and please specify this in your submission.

Judging Criteria:

  • Explain the alignment of your experience with the interests and needs of the culturally curious (40%)
  • Describe the promotion and advancement of culture in the community (20%)
  • Show the stimulation of tourism and economic activity within your locality or nationally (20%)
  • Define your commitment to cultural sustainability (20%)
